Von deutschen Donauhäfen aus fuhren im 18. Jahrhundert regelmäßig Schiffe flussabwärts. Menschen, die sich im südöstlichen Mitteleuropa eine bessere Zukunft versprachen, ließen sich einschiffen. Die meisten stammten aus den südwestlichen Ländern des Heiligen Römischen Reichs Deutscher Nation. Ihr Ziel war das Königreich Ungarn, wo nach der Befreiung von der türkischen Herrschaft Arbeitskräfte benötigt wurden. Die Einwanderer nannte man unabhängig von ihrer Herkunft »Schwaben«. Sie waren wirtschaftlich erfolgreich und prägten weite Landstriche. Nach 1918 gehörten diese nun »Donauschwaben« genannten Gruppen drei verschiedenen Staaten an.Ab 1944 verloren Hunderttausende durch Flucht, Vertreibung, Verfolgung und Deportation ihr Zuhause, Tausende ihr Leben. Ein Großteil der Entwurzelten fand in Süddeutschland Zuflucht. Lediglich die Banater und Sathmarer Schwaben in Rumänien und ein Teil der Ungarndeutschen durften bleiben. Viele von ihnen kamen als Spätaussiedler nach Deutschland, die Verbliebenen bilden heute aktive deutsche Minderheiten in ihren Heimatstaaten.
