Mais nous ne savons pas ce que signifie une révélation, parce qu'elle ne peut ni se commander ni se reproduire, donc jamais s'objectiver. Ainsi restons-nous muets devant ce qui nous caractérise le mieux. Les ignorant, nous nous ignorons. Ce livre voudrait nous les rendre accessibles.Le lieu privilégié de la révélation se trouve dans ce que la tradition juive et chrétienne a reçu et médité à partir des deux Testaments. Nous y sommes donc allés voir, malgré leur technicité et les limites de toute science.Pourtant il faut d'abord déconstruire, car aucun terme biblique ne correspond exactement au concept moderne de Révélation. Plus étonnant encore  : ce terme ne s'est imposé que tardivement (Thomas d'Aquin) dans l'opposition de la connaissance rationnelle à connaissance inspirée de Dieu. La modernité (les Lumières jusqu'à Kant) n'eut donc aucun mal à récuser la Révélation biblique au nom de sa trop étroite appréhension de la rationalité.Puisque les théologiens modernes ont maintenu le terme de Révélation sans le re-penser à fond, il fallait tenter de le redéfinir à partir de la phénoménalité. Car les textes bibliques offrent d'abord et surtout des récits de phénomènes, à la fois simples et hors du commun  : manifestations, apparitions, signes et miracles, éblouissements, des ténèbres obscures et une Résurrection. On peut par principe les récuser comme des fables, mais en stricte philosophie et phénoménologie tout ce qui se manifeste doit, avant qu'on juge de son (in-) existence, se décrire.D'où l'essai de décrire ce que les textes bibliques proposent obstinément à voir. Ainsi s'est ouverte une nouvelle définition de la connaissance  : non plus accepter ce que l'on a d'abord cru comprendre, mais voir (on non) ce que d'abord on accepte  (ou refuse) de recevoir, en renversant l'ordre de l'entendement et de la volonté. Ce qu'Augustin a thématisé d'une formule  : «  On n'entre dans la vérité que par la charité  ».Et alors, même l'être et le temps peuvent se recevoir comme ils se donnent  : non dans la clôture de notre monde, mais comme un don d'ailleurs.
