Increasingly, pure forms of representative democracy are complemented by other formal or informal mechanisms. It is also incumbent upon political scientists, sociologists, and academics from other disciplines to determine if these institutions provide means of curing the current democratic malaise. These include referendums, popular votes on petitions proposed by citizens, the recall (on the revocation of the mandates of elected representatives), citizens' juries, sortition (selection of advisory panels of citizens based on random selection), agenda initiatives, eDemocracy and many others.
