At first it was Irish immigrants, but then Lithuanians and Poles. The factories needed labour and the town grew rapidly. This mixing of traditions has made Widnes the lively and varied town we know today.
Before this transformation, the Mersey was a place to enjoy pleasant walks beside the river, to watch the shrimp boats and enjoy the snig pie at the Boat House Inn. The ancient ferry from Runcorn made this a busy thriving part of the town. Day trippers were attracted to the town.
The significance of the river is still influencing the town today. Widnes does not stand still and plans are well on the way to build another
